Author Guidelines

Articles submitted to Addiction Professional should focus on strategies to improve clinical professionals' success in working with clients with alcohol and/or drug use problems. We also are interested in broader field trends (workforce issues, insurance requirements, etc.) that have an impact on the everyday work of addiction counselors and other clinicians. Topics that we cover regularly in the magazine include treatment modalities that are proving successful with clients, the emergence of medications to treat alcohol and drug dependence, and innovative efforts to engage targeted special populations in treatment.

We seek to report on approaches that have a basis in the latest scientific research, and we encourage authors to cite pertinent research studies when appropriate. Yet because we seek mainly to offer readers tools for improving the care they deliver, we ask authors to streamline their descriptions of research findings, focusing in greater detail on the practices in which clinicians should be engaging. Articles should outline the "problem" very concisely and focus on the possible "solutions."

Articles are reviewed for accuracy, clarity and timeliness. Once accepted, they will be edited for grammar and organization and adjusted to fit the magazine's style. If editing is extensive, an edited version will be sent to the lead author for review. If an article is published, each author will receive two copies of the issue in which it appears and a one-year subscription to Addiction Professional at no cost (if requested). The article's copyright will be held by Addiction Professional's parent company, Vendome Group LLC, and all bylined authors will be required to sign a release to that effect prior to the issue going to press. Addiction Professional will not consider articles that have been submitted to other publications or that have appeared in other publications.

Manuscript Preparation

Feature article submissions generally range from about 1,200 to about 2,000 words in length, with column/department submissions generally ranging from 700 to 1,200 words. Letters to the editor should be no longer than 300 words (a signed copyright release is not required for writers of letters to the editor).

Please do NOT imbed tables, figures, or other illustrations within the text of your article (see "Graphic Elements" guidelines below).

Manuscript Submission

Submit articles electronically to garyenos5@gmail.com. Please send the file as an attachment saved in Microsoft Word. Include at the bottom of the article file a "bio" of two to three sentences for each author, along with the e-mail address of the lead author. We publish the e-mail addresses of our authors so that readers may have the opportunity to offer authors direct feedback on the article.

In your e-mail message with the article attachment, be sure to include your mailing address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address so that we may contact you during the editing process.

Graphic Elements

If photos, tables, or other graphics are sent electronically, each should be sent as a separate file from the article file. Figures and photos MUST be saved in a high-resolution (minimum 300 DPI) TIFF or EPS format to ensure publication-quality images.

If you cannot send your graphics electronically, you may send hard copies suitable for scanning, such as original photographs, photograph-quality prints (especially for color illustrations) and high-resolution computer printouts (for black and white figures and graphs only).

All photographs should be identified with a suggested caption. The captions should include the names of people shown and the location of the shot, if pertinent. If a photograph is copyrighted, the photographer or photography firm's name also must be included so that we can give proper credit. It is the author's responsibility to secure appropriate consents from people shown in photographs, and permission to reprint copyrighted photos. If you wish to have photographs returned, request this in your cover letter and include the proper return address.

Tables should be double-spaced and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the text of the article. Provide a brief title for each. Figures or graphs also should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the article.

References

A list of references or a bibliography may be included, using standard American Medical Association formats. Here are examples of how a typical journal entry and typical book entry should look, taken from a recent issue of the magazine:

Journal:
Thombs DL, Osborn CJ. A cluster analytic study of clinical orientations among chemical dependency counselors. J Counsel Devel 2001;79:450-8.

Book:
Bisell L, Royce JE. Ethics for Addiction Professionals, Second Edition. Center City, Minn.: Hazelden Publishing; 1987.

Cite references by number in parentheses in the proper place in the text (do NOT use standard footnote marks; the editors will take care of that during the editing process), and then list the full references in numeric order at the end of the article (after the author bio).

Bibliographies need not be referenced in the text and should appear at the end of the article in alphabetical order by author's last name.

Where to Submit
